How to Write a Press Release
Write a press release by leading with the actual announcement, supporting it with specific facts, and giving readers enough context to understand why the news matters.
1. Find the news angle
Before writing, finish this sentence: “The new development is…” If the answer is vague, the release probably needs a stronger reason to exist.
2. Write the headline
Use the company or subject name and the concrete development. Prefer “Acme Opens Second Phoenix Location” over “Acme Announces Exciting New Era.”
3. Build the lead
The first paragraph should make the announcement understandable without requiring the reader to continue.
4. Add evidence and context
Include dates, locations, product specifics, partnership details, event information or other facts that make the news verifiable.
5. Use a quote for perspective
A useful quote explains why the development matters. It should not merely repeat the headline in enthusiastic language.
6. Finish with boilerplate and contact details
Keep the company description concise and provide a contact who can respond to media questions.
